Magic or Science? – Ferrofluid in a Bottle for $9.65
I’ve once again stumbled across one of these amazing videos on the web with magnetic ferrofluid – and I’m hooked again. Read on to learn about the wonders of ferrofluid and where you might know it from.
Ferrofluid was developed years ago by the NASA to investigate the behavior of liquids in zero gravity. Meanwhile, the liquid has also found usage in high-end loudspeakers, for example for cooling or damping. It consists of a carrier liquid (in this case it’s oil) and tiny magnetic elements (5-10 nanometers). They’re so small that they can’t be seen with the naked eye.
This liquid is perfectly suited for creativity and experimentation. There are also hobby-chemists, who try to recreate such mixtures – but there seems to be much work behind it. So you now either have a new chemistry hobby or a gadget hobby – just think of macro photography! In addition, you can do a lot of really cool stuff with the magnetic fluid. For example, you can build a 7000 Euro watch:

I’d just like to mention it once again: No, you really should not drink the stuff. No, it is not suitable for younger children. Yes, it spots on your clothes and yes the “Black Spiderman” (or Venom) was inspired by ferrofluid ;). In addition, of course, magnetic materials should not be nearby ;).
