FIMI X8 SE 2022 – Upgrade of popular drone for $518 with US-Plug

The Fimi X8 SE quickly became one of the most popular “China drones” a few years ago – if you ignore the fact that market leader DJI also comes from China and doesn’t count it here. Incidentally, Fimi emerged from the Xiaomi Group and was originally responsible for the development of the first Xiaomi drone in 2015.

In the meantime, a mini version came on the market, but it is not that much smaller, at least in terms of price. Since the “big” drone is still popular, Fimi is now releasing an updated version for the second time.

The differences are minor at first glance, but there are a few. The new version is supposed to be more resistant to rain and wind (wind force 8). Since you don’t want to fly in the rain anyway (just because of the poor visibility, not to mention the wetness), this is perhaps negligible, but protection from the sudden drizzle is not wrong. It certainly also depends on what you primarily use the drone for.

The range has been improved from 8 to 10 km. The maximum flight altitude is now specified as 800 m instead of 500 m before. These are theoretical values that only exist on paper in this form for now; in practice, you won’t reach 10 kilometers. In my experience, disturbances in the video signal often become noticeable after a few hundred meters. In addition, you are usually only allowed to fly on visual range and not higher than 120 meters, if you adhere to the applicable laws.

There are also changes in the camera: The drone gets a larger sensor, which now grows from 1/2.6″ to 1/2″. This means more light and better recordings. The latency of the video transmission has also been reduced from 220 ms to 130 ms.

It is expected that both versions will be available in parallel for a while. So pay attention to what the seller states. In the long run, however, the Fimi X8 SE 2022 will replace the old drone if the latter is now no longer in production.
