News Honor 8X & 8X Max: 7,12″ Huawei Subsidiary Smartphone – War of the Phablets?

The term “Phablet” has almost died out in the last one to two smartphone years, but has recently become more popular again with the Xiaomi Mi Max 3. The Huawei subsidiary Honor is now attacking exactly this showpiece model. The Honor 8X Max even appears with a 7.12 inch display, but is very similar to the Max 3. In addition, a smaller version is released – the Honor 8X.

A 7.12 inch giant

Yes, 7.12 inch, you have read correctly. If you look at its predecessor, the Honor 7X, the manufacturer is taking a giant leap here, because the 7X came on the market with a 5.93 inch display. However, the resolution of this giant display still remains humane and is given as 2240 x 1080p, so the Chinese call it Full HD+. Thus, the Max version turns out to be quite big according to the name, but the Honor 8X is also quite big with a display diagonal of 6.5 inches. The resolution here is 2340 x 1080p.

If you design a smartphone that big, you still have to work in a space-saving way. That’s why Honor also relies on a notch, as it did with Honor 10. However, it is pleasantly small and can also be called a Waterdrop Notch. We already know this from the new Oppo R17. In our opinion, it’s a pleasant solution to install the front camera and not need a lot of screen space.

Some information could already be read from the leak of the Chinese certification authority TENAA. The Honor 8X MAX measures 177.57 x 86.24 x 8.13 mm, with a weight of 210 g. So it is slightly larger than the Mi Max 3, but a bit lighter. On the back it also strongly reminds of the Max 3, as the dual camera is arranged vertically and the fingerprint sensor is located in the upper third.

Apart from the size, the 8X and the 8X Max don’t really differ in design either. In addition, both devices are available in several variations: black, blue, red and with the Honor 8X in violet.

Larger display, smaller battery?

The fact that the 8X is somewhat lighter than its competitor is probably mainly due to a hardware component: the battery. At 5,000 mAh, the battery is large, but significantly smaller than the Max 3 (5,500 mAh). You can be sure that the battery life will be worse than with the Xiaomi device. After all, you have to illuminate an even bigger panel here and get by with a smaller capacity. Especially because MIUI is so designed for battery life, the honor should have a hard time here. But the 8X Max offers fast charging with 9V/2A.

Honor 8X Max battery

There is a little surprise when choosing the processor. The Honor 8X Max uses the Snapdragon 636. Somehow not surprising that this CPU also sits in the Xiaomi Mi Max 3, but still interesting that Honor doesn’t use its own HiSilicon Kirin processor. In addition there is either 4 GB RAM and 64 GB memory or 6 GB RAM and 128 GB memory, if you decide for the even stronger version with the Snapdragon 660 processor. We know it from the Xiaomi Mi A2, for example.

The in-house processor is saved for the smaller Honor 8X. The Kirin 710 processor with additional 4/6 GB RAM and 64/128 GB internal memory, which can be expanded, is built into this. The Honor 8X is also equipped with a 3.750 mAh battery and has a dual nano SIM slot including space for a microSD card.

The packaging has already been leaked.

There are also differences in the cameras in both versions. The Honor 8X, the smaller version, gets a dual camera on the back, which consists of a 20 megapixel and a 2 megapixel sensor. On the front is a 16 megapixel camera with a ƒ/2.0 aperture that supports certain AI features. The dual camera on the back of the Honor 8X Max consists of a 16 megapixel sensor and a secondary 2 megapixel sensor. The Selfie-Cam consists of an 8 megapixel sensor.

Both smartphones work with EMUI 8.2, based on Android 8.1. The Honor 8X works with Micro-USB and without Fast Charging, that only supports the Honor 8X Max with a charging power of 9V2A, so 18 Watt. Since Honor knows about his European fans, we also expect a global version, which is equipped with other languages and more LTE bands.

Evaluation – Honor 8X or Mi Max 3?

This will be exciting – Xiaomi vs. Honor. The Xiaomi Mi Max 3 interested many of you, the Honor 8X Max even comes with an even bigger display. But you have to expect a worse battery life, the overall performance should be on a very similar level. Then, of course, it depends on the individual preference: EMUI or MIUI? However, I find the two or three simultaneous releases somewhat confusing, but good, we also know that from Xiaomi.

The official sale starts on September 11th, the cheapest version of Honor 8X should cost about $150, with 4/64 GB, the smallest version of Honor 8X Max should cost about $170. These are of course OVPs, so the actual price in the shops will be even more expensive.
