News Honor V20 smartphone with in-display camera & 48 megapixel sensor

Will this be the trend for 2019? Apparently the motto is: “The more megapixels, the better”. After Xiaomi has teased a smartphone with a 48 megapixel camera, the Honor V20 follows! The new smartphones comes with a 48 megapixel sensor and in-display camera!

Honor View 20 concept

The Honor V10 was released in late 2017 and flew slightly under the radar. It offered top hardware and was the pioneer for Honor 10 and Honor Play. In Europe it came onto the market a little later than Honor View 10.

Front-camera in the display

Unfortunately there is not much information about the new V20 from Honor yet. Like its predecessor, the new Honor flagship comes without a notch. That’s because the front camera is in the display! Something similar awaits us with the Huawei Nova 4 and the Samsung Galaxy A8S, which was also presented in December.

The front camera appears as a “hole” located in the upper left corner of the front. The cutout has a diameter of 4.5 mm, in which the lens finds its place. It remains to be seen how well the manufacturer manages the transition between display and camera. Due to this position of the front camera we can expect a very borderless smartphone with a high screen-to-body ratio.

How many inches the diagonal measures is unclear, but it’s certain that it’s of course a Full HD+ resolution, i.e. 2310 x 1080p.

On the back there is another highlight: the 48 megapixel main camera. As with the rumored Xiaomi Mi 9, either Sony or Samsung are currently available as manufacturers of the sensor, the Honor V20 probably uses the Sony IMX586 sensor. Honor will use a dual camera at least, but also a triple camera, similar to the Huawei P20 Pro would be conceivable.

It is said that Honor also wants to use a ToF sensor (Time of Flight), which is very useful for AR applications.

Honor V20 In-Display camera

The Honor V20 gets the necessary power from the currently best processor from HiSilicon. The Kirin 980 also sits in the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and is very energy efficient thanks to its 7 nm production technology. In addition, we will probably see 6 gigabytes of RAM and at least 64 gigabytes of internal storage.

The battery size is likely to be medium large, but recharging is quick. According to the Chinese certification authority, the Honor V20 is equipped with 22.5W Fast Charge. Honor also relies on its new technology called Link Turbo. An AI can see how good or bad the Internet speed of the V20 is and accordingly switch between WiFi and mobile data or combine them!

Coming to China in December

The Honor V20 will be officially presented in China on 26 December, i.e. on the second Christmas Day. Europeans don’t have to wait too long, because the Honor View 20 (identical in construction, only a different name) will be presented in Paris on January 22nd. We don’t know yet if there will be a release for the US market.

What do you think of the “hole” in the display? Is it better or worse than the notch?

Why has this "”notch"” thing become such a big deal with phones? Does anymore honestly care or is it just the media making a huge deal about it?
