News Huami Amazfit Verge: new smartwatch with NFC & 24h heart rate measuring
Shortly before the Apple keynote, the first details of the new Amazfit Smartwatch came to light, in which the Huami CEO announced some information to avoid the copy accusations of the new Apple Watch. Now the new Smartwatch has been introduced. The Huami Amazfit Verge will be released in China today and will be much cheaper than initially expected. All further information can be found in the article!
With monetary support from Xiaomi, Huami is one of the leading manufacturers in the wearables sector. The Amazfit range in particular has convinced us with the Amazfit Stratos and the Amazfit Bip. Now a new product is in the starting blocks: the Huami Amazfit Verge.
After the first leaks of the new smartwatch, the name “Huami Amazfit X” was in the spotlight – this was probably only a temporary solution. Since 17th September 2018 the Huami Amazfit Verge has been in the digital shops. It is not that different from the Amazfit Stratos, but has a different focus.
New design and old hardware
The pictures show a very unagitated design concept behind the Verge. Here you don’t deviate so much from the first Amazfit Pace and the Stratos. The manufacturer once again relies on a 1.3 inch display; a diameter that has more or less established itself as standard.
The panel used is an AMOLED display, which is protected with Gorilla Glass 3. The watch itself is made of plastic, the strap is made of silicone. This results in a relatively low weight of 46 g at the wrist. In addition, the watch is equipped with an IP68 rating, but is not intended to go swimming with it.
Inside you once again rely on a dual-core processor with a clock frequency of 1.2 GHz. This pairs the Amazfit Verge with 512 MB RAM and 4 GB internal memory. We also know this combination from its predecessor, the Amazfit Stratos. In my opinion, however, this is not a point of criticism because the performance of smartwatch is of secondary importance. As long as everything runs smoothly and you adapt the software well to it, the hardware plays a minor role.
Huami Amazfit X with 24h heart rate measurement
A feature of which one is particularly proud of is the very accurate heart rate measurement over a period of 24 hours. By means of this precision one should be able to identify cardiac arrhythmia or even atrial fibrillation quickly. This can be achieved with even more accurate sensors and newly developed artificial intelligence. In fact, Huami fears that Apple will equip their new Apple Watch with such a feature.
It gets really exciting with the additional hardware. An important feature is NFC. This could be used for faster pairing with the smartphone, but of course also for contactless payment options. That would be first of all AliPay in China, which is not used in Europe. UnionPay will follow in November. GPS and GLONASS, WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 will be added. A SIM card slot will apparently not be used.
The integration into the Xiaomi ecosystem is also interesting. The watch has an integrated microphone, which makes it possible to use the Xiao AI digital language assistant. It can also be connected to Xiaomi’s Mi Home app, which allows you to control various Xiaomi Smart Home devices from your Smartwatch. However, we suspect that the Amazfit Watch app, which we know from the Stratos, will serve as a regular app. You can also use it to install your own watchfaces on the watch if you are not satisfied with the 11 pre-installed ones.
So many functions usually result in a short battery life. This is only true to a limited extent. Even if they don’t name an exact mAh number, the Huami Amazfit Verge should manage up to five days with one charge. This assumes that energy-intensive processes such as GPS positioning and sports modes are not used on a daily basis. Daily use should at least halve the running time.
Premium-Smartwatch for over 200$
To be honest, we were a little relieved when we saw the pricing for the Huami Amazfit Verge. In China it is available for the equivalent of $110, with the surcharge of the China shops we expect a price of $150. The question is whether the Verge should be used as a successor to the Stratos or if it is supposed to serve as an alternative to the Stratos. Unfortunately we have to dampen the anticipation a little at this point. Until a global version of an Amazfit Smartwatch appears, it usually takes at least two months. Amazfit Verge has been available in China since its official launch!
