OPPO Air Glass: New Smart AR glasses unveiled – Is this what the future looks like?

Hey, guys! Just a heads up: The linked offer is already a bit older and the price of the gadget might have changed or it might not be available anymore.

On December 14 and 15, the OPPO Inno Days will take place, where in 2020, for example, the OPPO X 2021 rollable smartphone was presented for the first time. A highlight this year is the OPPO Air Glass, smart AR glasses with an integrated micro-projector.

The OPPO Air Glass weighs only 30g!

That these are no ordinary reading glasses is already apparent at first glance. While the left half of the frame looks relatively “normal”, the right side shows the case in the shape of a circadian wing, i.e. chirping wings. Nevertheless, it is supposed to be light as a feather with just under 30 grams, and the case is CNC-milled. The smart element is modular and can be magnetically attached to and removed from the glasses. You can choose between two colors: black and white, and there is even an extra glasses case.

Inside is the OPPO Spark micro projector, which is as big as a coffee bean and consists of five lenses. It is illuminated by a micro-LED and thus achieves a maximum brightness of three million nits. The glasses lens is made of sapphire crystal and is specially curved so that projection takes place “inside” the glass. OPPO’s smart glasses can be controlled with a touch bar, voice, or even hand and head tracking.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 4100 processor, which also powers the Ticwatch Pro 3 smartwatch, works inside. There is a touch-sensitive touch bar at the front, two microphones and a speaker as well. At the moment, the glasses can probably only be connected to the Oppo Watch 2, OPPO smartphones with ColorOS 11 and OnePlus phones.

Why do you need AR glasses?

But what is it all for? AR stands for augmented reality, as we all know. The most famous example is probably Pokemon Go. In contrast to VR, you are supposed to still participate in social life and the OPPO Air Glasses improve this. For example, OPPO shows that it can be used to navigate on a bicycle, as driving instructions are projected in front of the eye, similar to a HUD in a car or video game. But it can also be used as a teleprompter, which can be very handy in case of a presentation. Thanks to enough computing power in the glasses, even real-time translations are possible.

Assessment of the Oppo Air Glass

It is convenient that the actual smart part is modular, so you can also use your glasses normally. Unlike other OPPO Inno Days products, the Air Glass is even coming to market, but strictly limited and only in China. A price is not known. What do you think of the OPPO Air Glass? Is it the future?
