News Xiaomi Black Shark: Gaming smartphone with water cooling for $589.99
Meanwhile you can also order the gaming smartphone from Black Shark. At Geekbuying the 6 GB version costs $589.99
Xiaomi didn’t have a lot of smartphone plans for this year yet, well, besides maybe a few (keywords: Xiaomi Mi 7, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S & Xiaomi Redmi Note 5). Apparently they also have enough time and capacity to start targeting the gaming smartphone market as well. On April 13th, the Xiaomi Black Shark gaming smartphone has been introduced, which comes with strong hardware and customized gaming software.

Xiaomi Black Shark: Smartphone or game console?
The answer is somewhere in between. The pictures clearly show that Xiaomi Black Shark is designed to be a gaming smartphone. The back is more reminiscent of an outdoor smartphone than a classic flagship. The neon-green Black Shark logo is centrally located – and can also light up! The antenna strips form an X together. With a total weight of 190g / 6.7oz, it is relatively light for dimensions of 16.1 × 7.5 x 0.92cm / 6.3 x 2.95 x 0.36in.
On the top side you can see a horizontally arranged camera, which is equipped with two camera lenses. Located beside them is the flash.
This leak was confirmed at the presentation. The front side reminds us at first sight of the Xiaomi Mi Note 3: While the two margins are very thin, the upper edges of the screen are much wider. So wide that there is even room on the underside for a home button including fingerprint sensor. As expected, the Black Shark is equipped with a 5.99 inch display with a resolution of 2160 x 1080p. This is an In-Cell LC display and not an OLED screen.
The whole phone has a black and neon green look. This reminds us of Razer and their gaming products. Alternatively, it is also available in grey and green.
Gaming smartphone with appropriate hardware
The rumors have been confirmed and in fact it was no big surprise. The Black Shark has all the features you would expect from a current flagship smartphone. The heart is the new Snapdragon 845 processor, which is also used into the new Samsung Galaxy S9. The CPU consists of eight cryo 385 cores, which can clock at a maximum of 2.8 GHz. In contrast to its predecessor, the average power output is 25 percent higher. There are two different combinations of memory: 6/64 GB and 8/128 GB. Basically it is very similar to the recently released Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S.
Interesting in any case is the benchmark result of the Black Shark gaming smartphone in AnTuTu. At 279,464, this is even higher than the result of the new Samsung Galaxy S9 and higher than previously leaked screenshots let us expect. This confirms that this is a performance beast, i.e. a gaming smartphone.
The battery has an average capacity of 4,000 mAh, but it is expected that some optimizations have been made just for gaming. On the positive side, however, Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 standard is supported. But we are wondering why the even faster 4.0 standard is not integrated as the processor does support this standard.
Despite the gaming claim, a camera setup is not missing, of course. On the back are two camera lenses, a 12 megapixel sensor with a ƒ/1.75 aperture and a 20 megapixel sensor, also with ƒ/1.75 aperture. On the front you can also expect a 20 megapixel camera!
Xiaomi Black Shark with water cooling
Probably the biggest innovation in the Black Shark is the integrated water cooling. Yeah, that’s right. What is quite common in the PC gaming sector, the manufacturer has now ported to mobile devices. Of course, this system cools better than the conventional cooling system, making sure that the gaming smartphone does not overheat or become as hot at all. The presentation in Beijing did not omit a comparison to the biggest competitors, Apple and Samsung. Overall, the cooling manages to reduce the CPU core temperature by a maximum of 8° C.
Shark GamePad: the appropriate accessories
Of course you can play games with almost any smartphone. However, the gaming experience is limited, as most devices are not designed for it. To play really well with the Black Shark, you need the appropriate accessories, which remind us of the Joycons of the Nintendo Switch. This is what Xiaomi calls Shark GamePad. The controller can be plugged into the top of the device and offers a joystick and other buttons. It connects to the mobile phone via Bluetooth 4.0 and should provide a total of 30 hours of gaming fun, thanks to the built-in 340 mAh battery.
JoyUI: a customized gaming operating system
An earlier screenshot already gave information about the operating system: Android 8.0 is pre-installed. But Black Shark Technology & Xiaomi have adapted this greatly. The result was JoyUI, the matching gaming operating system, which combines the best of Android and MIUI and adds further features. Two of them will be the Dock and Shark Space. The dock is the control center that is opened by a swipe-down gesture from the top of the screen. But this was optically adapted in such a way that it takes up as little screen space as possible during gambling.
Then there’s Shark Space. This is also a special interface that could be compared to the PlayStationNetwork or Google Play games, for example. This means an overview of your own games, possible milestones that you can reach and of course networking with friends.
Xiaomi Black Shark – A must for mobile gamers?
Xiaomi attacks its competitor Razer directly with the Black Shark, who released their gaming smartphone in November last year. So far this niche is still quite untouched. However, the Black Shark offers hardware at flagship level and has been adapted accordingly. So if you are a fan of mobile gaming, you should get your money’s worth here. However, the Black Shark (so far) seems to concentrate exclusively on the Asian market.
