News Xiaomi Mi 8: New flagship for the 8th birthday (All Leaks & Infos)

The rumors around the Xiaomi Mi 7 were as many as they were false. Now Xiaomi herself let the cat out of the bag and officially confirmed the presentation of the Xiaomi Mi 8 on May 31st in Shenzhen. If and why the “7” is simply skipped like this, read below. More information and what Xiaomi produces in the meantime can be found in our detailed information graphic.

Xiaomi Mi 8 Announcement

Xiaomi definitely didn’t miss out last year and also this year it was very busy. That is why they have already presented the successors of their popular top models. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S was presented at the end of March and we have already seen the Redmi Note 5 at the MWC. Meanwhile further details of the next successor are known: the Xiaomi Mi 8 will be presented in Shenzhen on 31 May 2018 and could even be launched in two versions.

New name & new Snapdragon 845 processor

The predecessor, the Mi 6, was extremely successful and also convinced us in the test. It was so strong right from the start that newer models like the Mi Note 3 are virtually a larger version of the Mi 6. On the Chinese Twitter counterpart Weibo new information about the Mi 8 was leaked, which confirms many rumours. The jump from Mi 6 to Mi 8 is probably for two reasons. On the one hand, this year is Xiaomi’s eighth birthday, on the other hand, the number “8” in China also stands for happiness. Although Xiaomi has now also confirmed the Mi 8, it is still possible that there will be a Mi 7 without the fingerprint sensor in the display. We can’t be sure until May 31st.

Xiaomi Mi 8 Specs

But what is certain is that the Snapdragon 845 processor is working inside. Qualcomm has already introduced the processor and it is used in the Mi Mix 2S, for example. The CPU clocks in eight cryo 385 cores with a maximum of 2.8 GHz. Overall, it is more powerful and energy-efficient than the 835, but was manufactured using the same 10-nanometer process. The 6 GB and 8 GB of RAM that support the CPU also seem relatively secure. Furthermore, it is relatively certain that the new MIUI 10 interface based on Android 8.1 Oreo will run on the Mi 8.

MIUI was also officially announced for 31.05.2018

Xiaomi Mi 8 brings dual camera with AI

Xiaomi wants to use the chip in combination with the camera. The manufacturer will install a dual lens camera consisting of the 12 megapixel Sony IMX380 and the 20 megapixel Sony IMX350 sensor. The processor should improve the camera quality through artificial intelligence, as Xiaomi already does with the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S. This improves the photo quality especially in low light conditions. The two cameras are arranged vertically as you can see on the Mix 2S and Redmi Note 5 Pro.

6.01-inch OLED display with notch

Furthermore, the Mi 8 comes with a 6.01 inch OLED display. This makes the screen significantly larger than its predecessor, which still has a 5.15-inch screen diagonal. The Mix 2S has almost the same screen diagonal. The display panel apparently comes from Samsung. The battery capacity has also changed according to the latest information. It can be assumed that a 3,400 mAh battery is located in the Mi 8. In addition, the back seems to be made of glass, which also makes the Qi-charging capability more and more probable.

Here one allegedly sees the front of the Mi 8 with large notch.

New information seems to confirm a kind of “notch”, i.e. a display recess. The XDA developers find concrete references to this in the firmware of the device. While the rumors were probably unfounded with the Mix 2S, they are relatively safe with the Mi 8. At least the statements of the developers have been reliable in the past. This is also confirmed by the entry for the infrared camera. The purpose of this is to unlock the display via face recognition (picture below), which is probably safer than the simple face unlock feature of the Android competition, which only works with the normal front camera.

Xiaomi Mi 8 and a Xiaomi Mi 7 (Plus)

Apple has released two versions of its smartphones for several generations. Xiaomi obviously likes that. Because there is still a rumour that the manufacturer is releasing both a Xiaomi Mi 8 and a Xiaomi Mi 7 (Plus). The speculations go so far that perhaps only the Mi 8 version with a fingerprint sensor in the display should come (as this video suggests). Theoretically, the versions could differ only in the display size or in the Face Unlock technique. A small difference in the size of the battery would also be conceivable. Otherwise, however, many leaks suggest that most technical specifications are identical.

In the notch hides the technology for face recognition, which should be safer than with the Android competition.

Flagship with In-Display Fingerprint Sensor?

The solution of the fingerprint sensor remains a great mystery. Does Xiaomi manage to implement it under the screen? There are some clues. Besides, Doogee and Vivo have already shown us how well this can work. Since the Xiaomi Mi 8 is the company’s new flagship, it can be assumed that Xiaomi will save this feature for its best smartphone. The firmware available to XDA developers clearly shows that a fingerprint sensor is integrated in the display. It is possible, however, that this feature is only available for the Mi 8 in the Anniversary Edition.

Release & Price

So far none of this information has been confirmed by Xiaomi, except for the date and MIUI 10. However, you can see again with the Redmi 5 and 5 Plus that Leaks can prove to be true. The new Snapdragon 845 makes the Xiaomi a true top model. We are happy to see that Xiaomi is at the forefront. A Qi-charging capability is long overdue and will hopefully be integrated, similar to the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S.

Originally a release in spring 2018 was planned. But that’s out of date now that Xiaomi has just presented the successor of the Mi Mix 2 at the end of March. The price of the Mi 8 should be about $438 (6GB/64GB) or $500 (8GB/128GB). These are of course only the converted prices for China, for us the prices in the China shops will be somewhat higher according to experience.

Now we only have to wait one more week and then we finally see the Mi 8! Which feature do you hope or look forward to the most?
